The energy and playfulness of this low-budget outdoor production—directed by Don Johnson and performed by a high-spirited, audience-pleasing non-Equity ensemble in a different city park each weekend—go a long way toward redeeming what many consider to be one of Shakespeare’s weakest works (and probably his first attempt at playwriting). Set in the Yukon during the gold rush, the production employs an arch, intentionally cartoonish acting style that matches well the play’s paper-thin characters and lighthearted, mildly naughty, exceedingly predictable plot about a charming rogue who’s pursuing two women at once. Raker Wilson is amusing as Proteus, the wannabe ladies’ man at the center of it all, but the play really belongs to Serena Pomeranz and Stephanie Rohr, as, respectively, the woman he cheats on and the one he wants to cheat with. —Jack Helbig
